Bupleurum & Peony Formula
The herbs in Xiao Yao San are thought to invigorate stagnant liver qi, nourish the blood and support a regular menstrual cycle. Jia Wei Xiao Yao San builds on this foundation with Mu Dan Pi (peony tree bark) and Zhi Zi (gardenia fruit) to clear heat and cool the blood.
Functions: Course the liver, fortify the spleen, harmonize blood, and regulate menses.
Indications: This formula treats heat and fire stemming from binding depression of liver qi and blood vacuity. Presenting symptoms may include vexation and agitation, a short temper, spontaneous sweating or night sweats, headache, dry eyes, flushed cheeks, dry mouth, irregular or painful menses, vicarious (counterflow) menstruation, pain in the lower abdomen, and difficult, painful urination.
